Amateur Racers Shine at The Guaranteed Rate Ironman

A full day of amateur motocross action took place on Sunday, August 30^th, in conjunction with the annual Guaranteed Rate Ironman National Weekend at Ironman Raceway in Crawfordsville, Indiana, giving amateur racers a chance to compete on the same track that the fastest pro riders in the world competed on the day before.

Part of the FLY Racing Showdown Series, presented by Lincoln Trail Motosports, the Amateur MX Day drew over 650 entries as riders from all over the country competed for trophies and prizes in 34 classes.

Following the same protocol as the Pro National on Saturday, Sunday’s Amateur MX Day observed MX Sports’ 2020 COVID Mitigation Health Plan, which requires teams to take appropriate actions to guard against the threat of COVID-19.

One of the most productive riders on Amateur Day was Eugene, Missouri’s Levi Rains, who won three classes in all, turning in 1-1 performances in the 50 Pee Wee (4-8), 50 JR (4-6) and the new Mini-E (4-8) divisions. Rains rode a Cobra to victory in the 50 Pee Wee and 50 JR classes, and one of the new KTM electric bikes in the Mini-E class.

Rains we particularly excited about racing on the same track as the pros.

“It’s pretty sick that i get to race the same track,” said Rains. “I watched it the day before on TV and then my dad asked if i wanted to go race it since we were only an hour away training at SSR in Bowling Green, Indiana prepping for Baja.”

Rains said his favorite part of the track was the step-up after the bridge and the double out of the that section.

“I think I made up the most time from the finish back around to the start straight, although that section did take me down in my first moto in the 50 Open class,” added Rains. “I got the holeshot and was running second at the end of the first lap holding pace with the leader when I went down. I ended up 8th in that in the first moto and finished 3rd in the second moto for a 4th overall.” 

Winning two classes was 10-year-old Jonathon Getz, of Florida, who put his KTM on the top of the box in the highly competitive 65 Open (7-11) class, as well as in the 65 SR (10-11) class.

Getz’s 1-1 moto tally beat out the 2-2 performance of fellow KTM rider Mathew Alshouse in the 65 SR class. Meanwhile, Boe Lookabill’s 5-3 landed the KTM rider on the final step of the podium.

“It was really fun to get to race on the same track that the pros raced on Saturday,” said Getz. “It was pretty cool. I really liked the part of the track where you go under the bridge and then there is the step-up. I think that’s where I made up most of my time on everyone.”

In the 65 Open division, Getz once again posted a pair of moto wins to beat out the 3-2 performance of Wyatt Duff (KTM) and the 2-3 finish of Dakota Baker (KTM).

Another two-class winner was Pennsylvania’s Timmy Crosby, who rode a Kawasaki to wins in the ultra-fast Open A and 250 A divisions.

In the Open A division, Crosby jumped out into the lead in the opening moto and led all five laps to claim a clear-cut moto victory ahead of Illinois rider Giancarlo Clouser in second and Honda-mounted Dominic Desimone of California in third.

In the second moto, Crosby worked his way up from sixth on the opening lap to second place at the finish to clinch the overall victory.

Husqvarna-mounted Jorge Rubalcava, who was fourth in the first moto, won moto two and parlayed his 4-1 finish into second overall.

Desimone was third overall after posting a 3-3 moto finish.

In the 250 A class, Crosby led every lap but one en route to a 1-1 finish, securing the overall win ahead Yamaha-mounted Skylar Leaf’s 2-3 performance and KTM-mounted Gavin Chinn’s 4-2.

In the B classes, James Runyan of Tennessee went 1-3 to win the Open B class over the 3-2 of Dakota McKay (Kaw) and the 5-1 of Braden Gray (Kaw). Meanwhile, Kawasaki-mounted Edgar Lewis posted a perfect 1-1 performance to win the 250 B class ahead of the 4-2 of Runyan and the 2-4 of McKay.

Another rider winning multiple classes included Owen Shull, who won the 50 SR (7-8) and 50 Open (4-8) classes on a Cobra.

KTM-mounted Brady Weir led every single lap in the Supermini (12-16) class, his 1-1 performance besting KTM-mounted Kobyn Kimmel’s 2-2 finish. Ethan Medcalf went 3-5 to finish third overall on a Kawasaki.

Weir returned later to sweep the Schoolboy 1 (12-16) division ahead of the 3-2 of fellow KTM rider Nathan Baumgartner. John Perovic (KTM) posted 2-3 moto finishes for third overall.

Kawasaki’s Edgar Lewis used a pair of moto wins to top the Schoolboy 2 (12-17) division, topping the 2-2 of Skylar Corbin (Yam) and the 3-3 of Reyce Barna (Hon).

The 85 JR (9-11) class was won by Levi Gibson on a KTM with a 1-2 moto finish. Fellow KTM riders Luke Brown (3-3) and Jonathon Getz (2-4) rounded out the top three.

KTM-mounted Kaden Davidson swept both motos to win the 85 SR (12-15) class ahead of KTM-mounted Nathan Bierbom (2-2) and Yamaha-mounted Tristan Dalton (3-3).

Other winners included Ely Gross (85 Open 9-15); Mason Pelphrey (14-24); Dylan Cox (25+ A); Nathaniel Kronk (25+ B/C); Dominic Desimone (30+ A); Donald Baker (40+A); David Weis (40+ B/C); and Joe Day (50+ B/C).
