FMF Privateer Power Award: Hangtown Motocross Classic

Wednesday, September 15, 2021 | 4:00 PM

For nearly 50 years Southern California's FMF Racing, one of the most iconic names in the industry, has  poured all its resources into developing the finest exhausts available in the motorcycle marketplace. Throughout its tenure as a partner of the world's most prestigious off-road motorcycle racing championship, FMF has sought to leverage its support of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship by bringing well-deserved attention to the underdog racers who fight tooth and nail each weekend as a privateer. As a result, the FMF Privateer Power Award has become an embodiment of what the brand stands for, and what these lesser-known racers epitomize every time the gate drops.

Each week, FMF and the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will recognize the rider that deserves to be celebrated for his efforts at every stop of the 12-round season. Each selected rider will be recognized for his ability to defy the odds and capture head-turning results, showing no intimidation as he battles alongside some of the sport's biggest names in what is considered to be the deepest field of talent ever assembled in series history.

Each recipient of the FMF Privateer Power Award will be given special recognition as part of the riders meeting at the following national and is awarded with a custom-designed trophy.

After a long, grueling summer, the 2021 Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship concluded with the sport's oldest event, the Hangtown Motocross Classic. The legendary Northern California venue is one of the toughest challenges in American motocross, with a track that gets rougher and rougher as the day wears on and serves as a difference maker in the outcome of the afternoon.

After spending the early part of his pro career across the border in Canada, while also honing his talents in the off-road discipline, Californian Ryan Surratt embarked on his first full Pro Motocross campaign for the 2021 season . Riding aboard a Team Allsouth Husqvarna, it didn't take long for Surratt to acclimate to the incredibly deep 450 Class and use his past experience to his advantage. Surratt was a regular presence inside the top 20 over the course of the championship and as the series neared its conclusion, he progressed to become a top-15 contender.

After an entire summer on the road, traveling from one National to the next on his own with the help of a friend, Surratt entered Hangtown looking to end the season on a high note. He was knocking on the door of his first top-10 finish the previous round at his home race at Fox Raceway and carried that momentum into the season finale.

Thanks to a pair of solid starts, Surratt found himself in the thick of the fight inside the top 10 over the course of both motos. He went bar-to-bar with the likes of many of the 450 Class' most respected racers, and emerged with a career-best performance. Back-to-back eighth-place moto finishes was enough to land Surratt inside the top 10 for the first time, ending the season in seventh overall. Full factory and factory supported riders sandwiched Surratt in the overall standings, as he became the latest privateer to break through with the performance of a lifetime.

Following such an incredible effort, Surratt became the obvious choice as the 12th and final FMF Privateer Power Award recipient for the 2021 season.
