As longtime partners of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, it's fitting that Deltran Battery Tender serves as the title sponsor of the series specialty award that embodies the company's products. As a manufacturer of the world's most trusted and reliable household commercial battery chargers, jump starters, inverters, and other accessories for vehicles, Battery Tender is a lot like the most accomplished rider in the history of American motocross, Ricky Carmichael.
With more than 100 career wins and 10 career championships in the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship, Carmichael is the standard bearer of success, and it's why he's affectionately known as the G.O.A.T. (Greatest of All Time). Exactly 10 years ago, Pro Motocross cemented Carmichael's legacy in American motocross with the introduction of the Ricky Carmichael Hard Charger Award. This award recognizes the one competitor at each of the 12 rounds of the championship who overtakes the highest number of his fellow racers in either moto of the 450 Class.
The RC Hard Charger Award is a testament to the never-give-up attitude Carmichael displayed over the course of a dominant career that will likely never be duplicated. Each recipient of the Deltran Battery Tender RC Hard Charger Award is recognized at the riders meeting at the following national, where he is awarded with a custom-designed trophy.
Near perfect conditions provided a stellar track for the riders at the MotoSport.com Washougal National, and the ensuing action in the 450 Class was some of the most exciting of the entire 2019 season. Several riders were faced with adversity over the course of two motos, but none were as successful in overcoming their obstacles as Kawasaki rider Lorenzo Locurcio.
The Venezuelan rider found himself mired at the tail end of the field in the opening moto of the day at Washougal MX Park, eventually completing the opening lap in 37th place. Knowing there was nothing left to do but go to work, Locurcio did just that and started an impressive march through the field that ultimately carried him to a hard-earned 18th-place finish in which he was rewarded for his efforts with valuable championship points.
With his improvement of 19 positions in Moto 1, Locurcio is the deserving recipient of the RC Hard Charger Award for Washougal.
