FMF Privateer Power Award: Southwick National

Wednesday, July 14, 2021 | 3:00 PM

For nearly 50 years Southern California's FMF Racing, one of the most iconic names in the industry, has  poured all its resources into developing the finest exhausts available in the motorcycle marketplace. Throughout its tenure as a partner of the world's most prestigious off-road motorcycle racing championship, FMF has sought to leverage its support of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship by bringing well-deserved attention to the underdog racers who fight tooth and nail each weekend as a privateer. As a result, the FMF Privateer Power Award has become an embodiment of what the brand stands for, and what these lesser-known racers epitomize every time the gate drops.

Each week, FMF and the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will recognize the rider that deserves to be celebrated for his efforts at every stop of the 12-round season. Each selected rider will be recognized for his ability to defy the odds and capture head-turning results, showing no intimidation as he battles alongside some of the sport's biggest names in what is considered to be the deepest field of talent ever assembled in series history.

Each recipient of the FMF Privateer Power Award will be given special recognition as part of the riders meeting at the following national and is awarded with a custom-designed trophy.

Perhaps no track in the Pro Motocross Championship is more demanding and challenging than New England's legendary sandbox known as The Wick 338. As the most storied sand track in American motocross presents a truly unique challenge to the world's best riders, as its hard base and ever-changing loose top soil forces competitors to not only be acutely aware of the track's evolution, but also be in constant search of new racing lines. As a result, navigating through a pair of 30-minute-plus-two-lap motos can prove to be a daunting task.

This one-of-a-kind distinction of Southwick is what also makes it advantageous for local riders to find success against their full-time counterparts. Case in point, Connecticut's Chris Canning. Riding aboard a KTM, Canning excelled on his home track and progressed from battling for moto points to being a fixture in the top 15 all afternoon long. Just a few years ago Canning earned a career-best 12th-place finish at Southwick and he rose to the occasion once more against an even deeper field of talent in the 450 Class, capturing a pair of 14th-place moto finishes to land 14th overall.

By virtue of his exceptional performance in front of the hometown crowd, Canning was an easy and deserving choice to be the recipient of the FMF Privateer Power Award for the Twisted Tea Southwick National.
