FMF Privateer Power Award: 2022 Southwick National

Wednesday, July 13, 2022 | 2:00 PM

Over the span of almost five decades, Southern California's FMF Racing has become synonymous with the sport of motocross, developing the finest motorcycle exhausts available in the marketplace. Over the course of its longstanding partnership with the world's most prestigious off-road motorcycle racing series, FMF has remained committed to its support of the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship by bringing much-needed and well-deserved attention to the underdog racers who fight tooth and nail each weekend as privateers, keeping the dream alive through any means necessary. As a result, the FMF Privateer Power Award has become an embodiment of what the brand stands for and what these lesser-known racers epitomize every time the gate drops.

After every round of the 2022 season, FMF and the Lucas Oil Pro Motocross Championship will recognize a rider deserving of acknowledgement and celebration for his efforts on the track. Each selected rider will be praised for his ability to defy the odds and capture head-turning results, showing no intimidation as he battles alongside some of the sport's biggest names in an incredibly deep field of world class talent featuring riders from across the globe.

Each recipient of the FMF Privateer Power Award will be given special recognition as part of the riders meeting at the following national and is awarded with a custom-designed trophy.

When it comes to Southwick, the unique sand racing surface will always prove to be arguably the summer's toughest test. As a result, it's common to see a local pro ascend to the upper-echelon of both divisions. This was the case in the 450 Class where Connecticut native Chris Canning leveraged his Southwick expertise to battle in the thick of the premier division alongside the sport's biggest names. A top-five start in Moto 1 saw Canning mix it up with the factory riders for most of the moto before he ultimately settled for a 12th-place finish. It was a different story for Canning in Moto 2, where he started deep in the top 20, but his wealth of experience in the sand allowed him to march forward and improve upon his starting spot to finish the afternoon with another 12th-place result. By virtue of his 12-12 performance Canning recorded the best finish of his career, narrowly missing out on a top-10 finish in 11th overall. That effort made him an obvious choice for FMF Privateer Power Award honors at Southwick.
